I'm Dr. Stephanie Johnson, a licensed clinical psychologist who works with adults and young adults in individual therapy.  My therapy style is primarily psychodynamic, which means that I will work with you to help you understand what is inhibiting your ability to achieve greater happiness; these are often factors that are not obvious from the outset.  My experience has shown that often the root of a problem is best addressed by helping clients to learn more about themselves and to see themselves and their relationships in a new and deeper way.  I believe that when clients are able to define the root of the problem, they are better able to take control and to make changes.

I earned my Masters degree in Developmental Psychology from George Mason University, my Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University, and completed my Clinical Internship at The American University.  My undergraduate degree is from Washington and Lee University.  I draw on my experience from a number of different settings in which I have practiced including outpatient mental health clinics, university counseling centers, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, and 18 years in private practice.  In addition to psychodynamic techniques, I also utilize interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral strategies with an emphasis on utilizing clients' own intuition and ability to trust themselves.  Whatever techniques I am utilizing, I consider the therapeutic relationship itself to be healing, and these relationships are imbued with both caring and respect for the client and his or her life experiences.

I welcome your call and look forward to getting to know you.
